MCU Membership Refund (Early Redemption) Policy
Understanding your membership contribution and the limited circumstances under which early redemption may be considered for financial hardship.
Important Notice
All member contributions to Middle Class United Cooperative are non-refundable. The $500 contribution is a one-time capital purchase of a member share, providing ownership and voting rights in the cooperative.
Early redemption is only available in cases of genuine financial hardship and requires Board approval. This policy protects the cooperative's structure and ensures compliance with federal and state tax laws.
1. Non-Refundable Membership Contributions
- All member contributions to Middle Class United Cooperative ("MCU") are non-refundable.
- The $500 contribution is a one-time capital purchase of a member share, providing ownership and voting rights in the cooperative.
2. Exception: Early Redemption for Hardship
To support members facing genuine financial hardship, MCU may allow early redemption of member shares under the following conditions:
Hardship Requirement:
The member must submit a written request explaining the nature of the financial hardship.
Board Approval:
All early redemptions must be formally approved by a majority vote of the MCU Board of Directors.
Documentation:
Approved redemptions will be recorded as an equity transaction, reducing the member's ownership position in the cooperative.
3. No Guarantee
Approval of early redemption requests is at the sole discretion of the Board. This policy does not guarantee that any early redemption will be granted.
4. Tax and Compliance Statement
By handling member contributions as capital and documenting early redemptions as equity transactions, MCU preserves its cooperative structure and ensures member contributions are not treated as taxable income to the cooperative under applicable federal and state tax laws.
5. Board Procedure
The member submits a written hardship redemption request through their profile dashboard or by contacting support directly.
The Board reviews and votes on the request.
If approved, the member's equity share is redeemed, and MCU's capital accounts are adjusted to reflect the redemption.
The transaction is documented in the equity ledger and the approval is noted in the Board meeting minutes.
